Ford’s Go Faster stunt driving experience transforms you into the ultimate getaway driver

Ford Go Faster stunt driving experience puts you in the driving seat

I’ve never wanted to be a stunt driver and I’m not even a fast driver but there was something alluring about Ford Go Faster.

It’s an immersive driving experience that allows petrol heads to live out their ultimate fantasy of being a stunt driver.

And what’s more, these moments are immortalised on video, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you drive.

You essentially become one of the main characters in a fictional film trailer, the designated getaways driver – think Baby Driver – who performs stunts to outrun the bad guys.

Before all that however, you actually have to learn how to do the stunts and get to grips with two of Ford’s prime performance cars.

The main weapon of choice is the Ford Focus RS, in an slick electric blue paintjob and then the aggressive new Mustang for good measure.

What was most apparent to myself at first was that a lot of the people we encountered are actors or actresses.

They are pretending that you are an up and coming actor/actress who has been cast as the stunt driver, Wheels, and putting you through the pages to get you ready for the film.

After being led through to the actor’s trailer by an overtly enthusiastic AD you meet the narcissistic director who continues the facade and hands you over to have a briefing and a grilling from the flamboyant stunt co-ordinator (who is also in it) before you’re assigned a driver and a stunt.

Thankfully the stunt  drivers were not actors but instead highly trained professionals who not only show you how to do the stunt and coach you through it but also put you completely at ease.

As part of the experience you perform four stunts – a J-turn, parallel park at speed, a drift and a getaway slalom.

Entering into these stunts there is a very real sense you’re going to completely mess it up.

These thoughts quickly wilted after a brief chat with the stunt driver who nonchalantly described the process, gives you a demo then hands the reigns over to you.

First up for us was the handbrake turn which requires you to completely switch off your brain and trust the car and its on-board tech and handbrake to do the job.

Essentially you drive towards a cone on an arc and then when you get close you wrench the handbrake and the car drifts sideways to a halt into a coned off box.

Handbrake turn

The rather pedestrian first parallel park I performed had about the same amount of drama as a ship canal boat turning around than something you’d see in the latest Bond film.

Thankfully all the stunt drivers were calm, patient as we fumbled through the first few attempts and helpfully offered clear and concise pointers to coach you through it.

After getting the hang of it you realise it’s the kind of thing you could do all day, well or until your clutch and handbrake completely disintegrated.

The J-Turn was up next and a particular favourite and although it takes some tricky clutch/gear work, it’s a fantastic feeling spinning the car, punching it into first and speeding off into the distance.

Now the Mustang. It’s an unhinged beast and frankly I was little bit daunted getting behind the wheel of such a behemoth. Also, with it being an automatic, exploiting its full pace and dynamic power was trickier than if it was a standard manual.

The stunt you were tasked with was to slalom through a set of cones perform doughnuts around a cone, more slaloming, more doughnuts then a speed to the finish.

You are timed against the clock so pace is encouraged but so is control as if you hit a cone you got a five second penalty.

It’s safe to say i’m not going to get that callback anytime soon, despite the flying time I completed the lap, the amount of penalties by bashing number of cones accrued sent my time down the leaderboard.

Drifting was another highlight and we had silly amounts of fun punishing the clutch as we skidded around the cone.

After you’ve practiced all the stunts you then assume the role of Wheels and are filmed performing them and cut into the trailer.

You are also required to act in a number of cutaways which really places your character believably in the trailer.

“This is a unique opportunity to not only perform stunts in one of the mostly highly-rated hot hatches, but to also see yourself and your stunt driving skills appear in a full length movie trailer,” said Andrew Merryweather, Ford’s Brand Experience Manager.

“It’s like cinema meets stunt driving lessons, all covered in sleek Hollywood-style production, and it gives participants an unforgettable day out as well as the ultimate brag-worthy content to share with friends.”

It’s not only a thrill for petrol heads or people who want to be stunt drivers it’s got a broad appeal that would just be a fun day out for anyone.

The experience is running from Friday 13th October to Sunday 22nd October and tickets cost between £50 and £99.

It’s limited so sign up quickly to avoid disappointment.
